"Fail Better" cut-out process

The color in the photos is rather off, but it's hard to edit with the metallic glare. It's gold metallic Strathmore paper. Took 3 days to do. Moving on to separate letter cut outs today.

How does this sound for the intro?

The content in this book is the result of walking around the shoreline of  Prudence Island, Rhode Island in the warm, early fall of 2011. These walks forced me to discover new territory in a familiar place. As I walked around the island I gathered mostly trash or abandoned objects. I photographed the objects and then began to pair them in digital collages. I began to ask myself questions like,  What is a thing? Can I begin to see things as more than mere objects? Can a thing  be an  island? Is an island ever truly isolated?
To begin to think of the things I collected as more then just trash I started to think of the former history of each artifact, what it may have been used for, what its properties are, if it was a piece of something or what pieces make it up. On further examination I begin to make the distinction  that an object is only part of what a thing is. A thing can not only be an object but an idea or concept. And what gives a thing its significance is our ability to acknowledge and consider its existence.
Each object in this book has a corresponding number as well as a corresponding description that hints to its’ prior life. These things also give clues what life is like on and around the island. This book catalogs the beauty and poetry we find in unexpected places.

catalogue printing

So Blurb makes beautiful books. I think I want to get my catalogue book catalog what ever printed through Blurb. And I will make a handmade book also. Everything is coming up so close! I made a mock up color book (on regular text paper) I am going to add one more bleed photo in the beginning before the book gets into the collages. And I am just worried about the intro text. I feel like I shouldn't go too in depth with the explanation of the book. I think it should be basic and straight forward, so that the reader can maybe make some of their own connections.

Since my book is a strange size I will have to make another indesign file that fits the specifications that blurb has for sizes. The blurb book will be around 8x9 inches. But that means a lot of redesigning. :( Not impossible.

Catalogue

I've been working on the catalogue, as well as sanding down the cut letterforms. When I photograph the letterforms, I will be posting them. I will also show a pdf file in class to show better quality images of the catalogue.

edits

This is the latest version of the comparison poster I made:

I don't know if I love it as much, but it makes more sense logically which matters.

I also laid out a possible gallery layout to scale (1' =1"). I realize that I might need a corner or part of one of the movable walls. I also really need postcards to start coming back to me. I have one so far.

Animation Update 03/07/12

This week I put each of the new walk cycles in their respective places and added crowds to each scene that needed them.

Postcard ideas

I worked on another idea for a postcard for our group. Randi, I mostly worked off of what you made. Thoughts? Suggestions?
